Greeneview High School Greeneview High School Student Counselors At Camp Kern Greeneview High School students apply to serve as camp counselors at a three-day, two-night spring Greeneview Intermediate School fifth grade outdoor education program held at Camp Kern. The lucky ones are selected after receiving teacher recommendations and an interview with camp organizers. Camp Kern is located on 485 beautiful acres in the Little Miami River Valley of Southwestern Ohio. Camp Kern is owned and operated by the YMCA of Greater Dayton. The camp has cabins, dining halls, and well maintained program facilities including an Olympic-sized pool, Circle K Ranch, high ropes courses, the climbing and repelling tower, the Giant Swing, Elk Lake, Optimist Pond, the Nature Center, Rotary Chapel, Tango Tower and Pete's Tower. Day One of the camp includes: arrival, unpack, orientation, KP duty, games, lunch, trail, warm-up break (it’s often cold and wet in March), trail/enrichment, weather break, KP’s report, dinner, group activity, campfire, snack and lights out. The students learn math, history, science and social studies at camp. They also learn other valuable lessons such as how to get along better with peers, cooperation in group tasks such as taking care of their cabins and cleaning up the dishes and getting along better in their outdoor environment. Camp counselor responsibilities include: being responsible for eight-ten fifth graders (table group), being in charge of a cabin group from 10:00 pm to 7:00 am, eating all meals with table group in the lodge, assisting Camp Kern staff and Greeneview teacher leaders on assigned trails (educational lessons), and being a positive role model for the elementary students.
